Collecting, managing and analysing data

I have created a sequence of lessons for students to explore data within the theme of "Fairytales". The teaching resource that I used with students is available on my Year 1 Digital Technologies website.
Lesson 1
In the first lesson, students look at "data" about various fairytale characters presented on digital worksheets. They begin to develop an understanding that data is a collection of facts about something by looking at the kinds of facts presented about each character. They then select one character and create a simple data display about the character using Popplet. The students had a lot of fun inventing data about the characters' addresses, ages, favourite foods etc.

Lesson 2
In the second lesson, students use a prepared spreadsheet (that I created in Numbers) to collect some data about the characteristics of five Fairytale characters. In the Numbers iPad app, students can use a form to input data, and as the cells are formatted to display a rating, by simply touching the dots, the students can record a rating for each character to show how clever, kind, scary, evil, old and attractive each character is. The prepared graphs on the subsequent sheets are automatically populated so that the students can discuss the data displays without needing to know how to create a graph in a spreadsheet. |
Lesson 3
In the third lesson, students used PDF worksheets found on Sparklebox to explore and collect data about different Fairytale characters. They opened the file in PDF Expert on their iPads so they could annotate the worksheet on their iPads.

Lesson 4
The students used another prepared Numbers spreadsheet to conduct a simple survey of their classmates. They asked their friends questions including "Who is your favourite princess?", and "What is your favourite fairytale?". To expedite data entry, a number of choices were included in the spreadsheet so the students selected from a dropdown menu to record each person's responses.

Lesson 5
To share their understanding of data and data collection processes, the students created a short video using Shadow Puppet EDU.
